--  Vietnam is cheaper to travel in as a tourist than Thailand, especially in the cities.

--  For people living in both countries, then Thailand is the more expensive both in the cities and the countryside as cost of living compared with income are different.

I stayed in a dorm in Bangkok for 100B a night and in Hanoi for $3. Of course there is less variety in food in Vietnam but I found by eating " on the street " or in markets it was the same as Thailand.  I found that Cambodia and Laos were more expensive.

A week in Vietnam can cost you about $294 (per person), while a week in Thailand may cost you around $496. These differences become even more noticable if you plan to spend a longer time in the country. ... Accommodation is often cheaper in Vietnam compared to Thailand ($22 vs. $34).
