Is there a way to add a "shuffle" feature to an MP3 player that doesn't have a shuffle feature built in?

    Nope.

It has to be included in the design of the firmware.

    No, not usually.

But some years back Sony had a range of portable MiniDisc players ranging from basic to full-featured deluxe.

What some people eventually realised was that to keep manufacturing costs low, a number of the mid-range players had many or even all of the features of the top model built in but disabled. They then worked out how to easily hack those players to unlock the additional features. Not all unlocked features worked though as some also required hardware missing on all but the very top two models.

So in the unlikely event that your player lacks a shuffle feature, but you know the same manufacturer makes a higher-specified model which does have that feature, then it *might* be possible to add that feature to your player.

If it isn't a built-in feature of that MP3 player (which would be rather unusual), then no. Not unless the manufacturer has released a firmware/software update to add that functionality.
