English grammar question?

Please read the following sentence.

"When Riya and her boyfriend reached Rebello’s home, *he* got into a fight with Riya during which she slapped Rebello."

Note the "he" with asterisks. Whom does the "he" refers to in this sentence: Riya's boyfriend of Rebello?

    I assume we are speaking of her boyfriend

    Riya's boyfriend. *He* refers to a person mentioned previously. That paragraph is poorly written.

    Based on the fact that it says Rebello was slapped by Riya I would assume the "he" is referring to Rebello.
