I’m trying to tighten a toilet seat that was fitted by someone else. It has a weird looking nut. Any ideas how I tighten this?

Hold the nut below with a wrench. Tighten from above with a screwdriver. Do not overtighten. Porcelin cracks very easily. Just tighten to snug and stop.

get some plastic bolts and large hexnuts to replace the metal items, coat them with cooking oil to keep them pliant and easy to move,,metal shrinks and expands possibly cracking the porceilin

Find a deep well hex socket that fits over the threaded rod, or a nipple of small pipe that you can fit onto the center spring inside the two square leaves and drive it up a little bit. Close the lid on the pot and have someone sit on it before you start the adjustment.

Hold the nut with a crescent wrench or pliers and use a screw driver from above

From the top, remember too tight can cause cracks.
