Some come from rhyming. Some are from other counties getting mispronounced.  Some come from other cultures.

I have never heard of Addy as a nickname for Amanda.

Some nicknames doesn't have to pronounced similar to your name. You can have a nickname that doesn't even pronounced anything like your name. You can have any nickname you want but make sure that nickname is not a masculine nickname for a girl. I hate that.

A nickname is different from the shortened version of your name.

I've never known anyone to use the nickname Addy for Amanda or Tessa for Theresa.  That must be a regional thing.

Sometimes things just stick.   Many nicknames have NOTHING to do with the person's given name.

A nickname is simply a name that is used as an alternative to a person's given name.  It's purpose is not necessarily to shorten the person's name.

Nicknames doesn’t have to include a person’s name at all. People call me James, my mame is Edward...they’re probably just confusing me with a different male nurse
