Why piezoelectric materials are used as sound detectors? ?

The materials generate an electrical current based on the deformation to stress or strain of external forces.  So if you allow a sound wave to push on one end of a small block or cylinder of a piezoelectric material, it will produce an electrical signal that varies in time the same way the incident sound wave does.  And most piezoelectric materials have linear reponses in the audio frequency range so you don't have to adjust the output amplitude to equalize the frequency response.
