The staggering of summer and winter events, where an Olympics would be held every two years instead of having both the same year every four, didn't begin until the 1994 Winter Games.

The IOC voted in 1986 to do this, but delayed it. Summer and winter games were held in 1988 and 1992, and then winter again in 1994, then 1998, 2002 and so on.

Because until 1992 Summer and Winter Olympics were held every four years on years that were evenly divisible by four, and 1986 is not one of those years.

  • Until the early 1990's the Winter and Summer games were held in the same years. So Winter Games were held in 1984 and 1988, same as the summer games. The IOC wanted to spread things out, so after the 1992 Winter Olympics they had another Winter games in 1994, then 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018. Summer games were held in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Up until 1992 the Summer and Winter Olympics were always held in the same year, every four years. Since 1994 they are held every two years, alternating between Summer and Winter Games.
