Too fat to have a hernia surgery?

My mother weighs 270 pounds. Her hernia very severe. But the surgeon said that she needs to lose 100 pounds before the surgery. What other options are there? If she had an extra year, she could loose the weight! But she needs a surgery much much sooner.

She could wear a truss, to help support the weakened hernia defect.

The reason for the weight loss is the closure after the repair. It is very difficult to  sew layers of fat back together. It does not hold a suture well and some  folks  have a fat layer that may be 6-10 inches thick.

Surgeons do not want to accept responsibility for an elective surgery that has a high risk of failure.
