What is the difference between smoked meat and barbequed meat?

    It's a really confusing bunch of terms, and there are no clear cut limits. Smoked meat is what is served in most Barbecue restaurants. But grills fired by charcoal or propane are called barbecue grills, and an invitation to a backyard cookout event is called a barbecue. As a point in fact, the original barbecue was barbacoa, a cow's head cooked over hot rocks in a pit in the ground. Not may people still cook barbacoa, but if you get the urge, here's the recipe:

    Smoked cow head barbacoa

    1 cow head

    Salt, pepper, and cayenne

    Two bottles of beer

    Long banana leaves


    Sprinkle the salt, pepper and cayenne all over the cow head.

    Completely wrap the cow head in several layers of banana leaves, securing it with kitchen twine.

    In a banana-leaf-lined hotel pan, pour two bottles of beer.

    Set the banana-leaf-wrapped cow head into the pan, and fold over pan-lining leaves.

    Cover cow head and bottom pan with another hotel pan. Secure tight with kitchen twine.

    Smoke for 24 hours, remove meat from head (will have to peel the skin off of the tongue), pull apart and make tacos!

    Smoked is 'smoked' inside a cabinet / oven, that has wood smoking under the meats, so its cooked in the heat & smoky atmosphere inside the cabinet/smoker.

    Barbequed is 'open' roasted over coals, with the flames its a more direct heat.

    Nothing.  All the other answerers are wrong because they are defining the word "barbecue" as a noun (a type of grill) not an adjective as it used in your question to describe meat.  Barbecued meat is smoked.  It is just that barbecued meat is also defined as any meat grilled on an outdoor grill.

    Smoked meat is basically meat(delicious meat) that has been um....smoked.

    Barbequed meat is basically meat(tasty meat) that has been.....barbequed(As in cooked, not smoked).

    Smoked meat is meat that has been smoked. Barbecued meat is meat that has been cooked on a barbecue.

    Smoked meat is slow cooked over wood fires which would give it the smoked flavor of the wood. The same technique is used in barbecue but a sauce is applied afterward.
