Because we have silica in our water, I replace mine one a year. It's really easy. Turn off the house water 1. Take the knob off by removing the cap and the screw. Slide the chrome sleeve off. 2. Remove the 2-3" threaded cap where the knob spline pokes through (counterclockwise.) 3. the cartridge is pressure fit with an o-ring so wiggle it out. 4. Do the reverse to assemble. Cartridge cost $20-30. Time for job 15 min. Plumber roll $100.00. Do it yourself.

The only common problem is that by the time the cartridge wears out, the wall has been re-tilled, plastered or otherwise needs to be  removed to get at cartridge.  Otherwise it's an easy do-it-yourself job.

You can do it yourself for $5. Shut off the water first. Then use a knife to prize off the plastic cap. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the valve. Pullit out, replace it and that is it. You can find videos on Youtube to show you if you are not sure, or ask your local hardware store.

Before you start, check the make of your faucet and whether you need hot or cold. Then go to Home Depot and buy the one you need. If you are not sure, buy the one you think is correct plus a couple of different ones, just to be sure. That way you have a cartridge ready when you start. Return the unused ones afterwwards.

Is so easy to do you should DIY.  Just turn off water to that part of the house.  Unscrew the faucet with the broken cartridge, and go buy the exact same part.  Then all you do is put it back into the faucet, rescrew the faucet and you are done.
