    Let the hourly rate be $x

    so, 40 hours => $40x

    Overtime 8 hours => $8(1.5x) = $12x

    Total => 40x + 12x = 52x

    Hence, 52x = 884

    i.e. x = 884/52 => $17/hour

    Jim worked 40 regular hours last week,

    plus 8 overtime hours at the time-and-a-half rate.

    His gross pay was $884.

    40x + 1.5(8x) = $884

    52x = $884

    x = $17

    His hourly rate was $17.00

    He got paid for 40 hrs plus (8 * 1.5) hr.  That's 40 + 12 or 52 hr.

    He got paid $884 for 52  hrs.  So 884/52 is his hourly rate.

    People criticize me for doing the whole problem for people.  So if you have a calculator, you can do it from here.
