What does it mean to mix and master? Like what exactly is it. And is it different then just making a beat and singing=song? If so how?

When recordings are made not everything is recorded at the same time. For example, when recording a choir the sopranos may be recorded on one track, the altos on another and the tenors and bass on separate tracks. The instruments are often recorded separately from the singers, no matter whether it's a solo or a choir. After everything has been recorded, the recording engineer then plays all of the tracks simultaneously and balances everything. That process is called mixing. The original recording is referred to as the master. If a recording is to be made at a later time the master is used.
