Do you have to clean oral thermometers before using for the first time out of the package?

    You don't HAVE to, but how hard is wiping one off with rubbing alcohol?  (You don't have to wash one in the sink with dish detergent, but even if you did, would the strain you beyond endurance?)

    I would recommend it. Never know what was in the factory that could have contaminated the thermometer.

    Yes.  Little known fact - when anal thermometers retire they become oral thermometers.
