Can I save a file full of old emails to a flashdrive? ...by drag and drop?

Yes, you can. However, in most operating systems, when you drag and drop a file from the Hard Drive to a USB drive, a new copy of the file will be created instead of a move being done.

Export the emails in EML files. Then plug in the flash drive and place the EML files on the flash drive.

Hard to answer this. Microsoft Outlook uses a PST file for its mail container. Other mail type have their own methods. Finally it is not the saving that is the problem it is having software that allows you to access, search and read these old emails in say 5 year time - that will be the issue.

It depends, there are so many variables before anyone could answer that question. Which email provider? Which email client?
