Is Federal oversight of nursing home care the type of regulations you want reduced?

As a nurse with years of SNF experience, nursing homes and similar residential facilities need a lot MORE inspection and oversight. These facilities know in advance when one of the infrequent inspections will occur and have special clean up, special training sessions for staff, to enable them to pass the inspection. Why are there not more surprise inspections? Because our tax system doesn't bring in sufficient public revenue to pay for this. Yet somehow our tax system manages to find the money to deal with problems that result when these facilities provide sub-standard care. We love to be outraged at the substandard care, but unwilling to pay for the measure that would prevent substandard care. How schizo.

How much oversight does the federal government have in regards to nursing homes?
- I can't think of much.
It would generally be state and local laws. As well as the Joint Commission (3rd party non-profit)
