Why donuts have holes? What is the purpose of it?

    So they can sell the holes separately and make twice as much money off you

    The fried ones need the hole to brown evenly. The baked ones don't really care, but would be sweet rolls without the hole.

    They cook more evenly that way. Without the hole, the outside could be overdone while the middle isn't quite done.
