Mc is traditionally Irish. Mac is traditionally Scottish. Some names have been changed with immigration papers and misspellings over the years though.

They're different names.  One is pronounced mick, one mack.   They originated as the same with "Mc" being an abbreviation, but that is no longer true.

No Mc is not an abbreviated version of Mac and they aren't separate names.

    They are seperate names.

McCleod and MacCleod are different names.

Mc is a contraction of Mac. A less popular one is M'.

They came from the same place, Gaelic meaning "son of," but Anglicised.

The reason? Some English counties or towns had rules about people not having Irish last names, so they were translated, as it were. As there was no standard form of spelling, the translations or spellings of the name varied.

They're separate names, with different pronunciations, Mc is pronounced like "Mick", and Mac is pronounced like, well "Mack", but similar meanings, "son".

No they are not the same. The people i know pronounce them differently too. “Mc” is always pronounce “mick” and Mac is pronounced with the “a” sound in there. Like how Canadians say Sorry with an O sound instead of the A sound some Americans do

There is no difference between Mac and Mc names. They are both anglicisations of the same word: "mac", meaning son. In Irish (Gaelic) "mac" means son, in Scottish Gaelic "mac" also means son. ... In Scotland, you will find that the anglicised spellings of the same Gaelic surname can be both Mac, or Mc.

Mac and Mc are separate names. Generally believed the one is Scottish and the other Irish, My wife's (Scottish) uncles and aunts were randomly registered as either.

    Peace.
