What would convince you that they are?

    Not now, but eventually they may suddenly realize they exist. When you think about how most computers are linked on the internet...a hivelike mind may emerge. 

    Combine that with having access to all of the world's information, and woweeee are we in trouble!

    Nope.

    The complexity of all the computers in all the world is still way, way short of the complexity necessary for consciousness.

    I suggest you look up a few sites regarding the structure of the mammalian brain. There is far more to it than an amorphous blob of randomly connected cells.

    Even the world's most ambitious attempt to simulate neural tissue cannot replicate the processing of a single neocortical column in real time. And consciousness does not even originate in the neocortex, so our most sophisticated computery falls way short of being anywhere near consciousness.

    computers can only do what humans program them to.

    doesn't sound "conscious" to me.

    genetic beings can evolve without programming.
