If I slapped someone for no good reason, would I be charged with battery or assault?

Depends on where you are. You'd be charged even if you had a reason.

In Georgia it would be both. These are two separate charges. One would be Simple Assault: O.C.G.A. §16-5-20 the other charge would be Simple Battery: O.C.G.A §16-5-23 both of which are misdemeanors. Depending on certain factors such as the age of the victim, if they are pregnant or not or where the crime took place etc the charges may be punished as a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature.

A&B in many jurisdictions is combined, so it don't matter none.

You could be charged with either or both.

As a general rule, assault is putting someone in fear of being attacked and battery is the actual attack. Threatening to hit someone and then following through with the hit would be "assault and battery". The definitions are determined by state law and can vary.

If you slapped the wrong person, you would need an autopsy. No need to worry about charges.

simple assault, in my state, is one blow with no significant damage. Two blows, or significant injury, is assault and battery ... a felony

Probably both. Perhaps you need to see a shrink.
