You will always be a potential hostage ,and bargaining chip ,from the point of view of the Iranian authorities .

    It is, unfortunately, that simple

The islamist regime in Iran routinely kidnaps and murders Americans.

There isn't a ban on US visitors, but you (along with Canadians and British people) do require a 'guide' (i.e a handler) to be with you. You'll also probably receive more hassle from the authorities than someone from, for example, Australia. However Iranian people are much more friendly - even to Americans - than their government is. The whole 'great shaytan'/death to America thing is even seen by some as a generic not-very-serious thing to say - like calling the French cheese eating surrender monkeys.

    • The French are cheese-eating-surrender-frogs not monkeys.
