I think he was a war hero who fought in World War 1 and got attacked by poison gas! His face was so disfigured, the doctors could not fix it! So he was forced to wear a mask to keep from frightening little children when he went out in public!

Because it's based on a dude named Erik who had a horrible mother. Can't bear to look at you. Put this on!!! The original mask was black.
