Sort of depends on which acid and what situation. It is most typically used to dissolve metals or base salts by the average person. Industrial and commercial uses are almost uncountable. Different chemicals have different uses, so it is pretty well impossible to say much more than "the acids are used to react with things susceptible to attack by acids", although often the acid is used to make wanted products rather than get rid of unwanted things.
