There is no one golden rule and comes down to individual interpretation of the situation, oftentimes the relationship/connection between the people involved and what is the intention/purpose of playing devil's advocate. What is to be gained by doing so?

It's appropriate when the person you're talking to seems undecided or at least open to another opinion. It's inappropriate if they seem relentlessly convinced they are right.

It's appropriate when someone is in a situation that troubles them and they ask for your opinion and you understand they must consider all the possibilities and the truth needs to be said. It's not appropriate if no one asked for your opinion and knowing even if you told the truth it would not be considered or may cause more trouble than it's worth.
