There are some online sites but a lot of them are not trustworthy. While you are playing chess with someone, they are at the same time hacking into your computer and stealing your identity.

Yahoo! has shut down their games section (which included Chess & other games) some years ago due to security (as it was running on Java) & privacy concerns that Yahoo! wasn't willing to invest the funds to update.
There are various online Chess services like Chess.com & the Free Internet Chess Server ( FreeChess.org ) that you can play with others online, which does include free services. Please be aware that you'll likely need to pick up a compatible CHESS client (like XBoard / WinBoard, ect.) to utilize these servers.

Not sure, but there's always Fritz Chessbase online which can also suggest moves with different probabilities of success for beginners.
Chess.com is very popular.
