Yes, for well over a thousand years.
Neuroscience, the name,
"18th century scientific research on "globules" and neurons, there is evidence of neuroscience practice throughout the early periods of history.
The early civilizations lacked adequate means to obtain knowledge about the human brain. Their assumptions about the inner workings of the mind, therefore, were not accurate."
19th Century "Mental Asylums" and lobotomies, and many other tortures delving into the mind. Many theories, local anesthetics, brain surgeries, poking about to see what happens when... and the like.
It is more of What the Brian IS Capable of, rather than "incapable" of.
Which part of the brain does what... which may still be wrong, but an interesting study.

What does this mean, exactly... Sure, they did psychic and telepathy tests 100 years ago. Not possible. Souls and essences aren't possible. Free will isn't either, depending on how you define free. Vitality isn't... there have been been hypotheses they tested that failed.

I think a lot of people take their brain out and play with it. Nothing changes, still idiots.
