Objectives. The Japanese attack had several major aims. First, it intended to destroy important American fleet units, thereby preventing the Pacific Fleet from interfering with Japanese conquest of the Dutch East Indies and Malaya and to enable Japan to conquer Southeast Asia without interference.

It   didnt, WW2  had been   on  since  1937 when the Japanese  invaded  China. The  Americans  would never have  entered  WW2 if they hadnt been  attacked  as they  were  doing  a great deal of  business supplying  both  sides with supplies.

It could be from the attitude we had when Admiral Perry was ordered to invade Japan because they didn't want us trading with them in their own country.
