because animals are conscious and most of them would rather be our friends

I think the idea is that animals can feel pain and are sentient beings but plants are not. But it is the circle of life to eat animals. A person eating meat is no more immoral than it is for a lion to eat a gazelle. But if they feel bad about it then let them not eat meat. Just so long as they don't try to guilt trip the rest of us for eating the natural diet that our body has evolved to eat.

Because plants, like Joe Biden, have no brain or central nervous system.

Because mammals and birds are sentient, they feel terror, trauma, depression, agitation and rage. They have memory and most importantly: they have the ability to suffer. So why would I make a creature suffer if I didn't have to..?

Plants don't have any of that. But you know that. You wouldn't trample a dog or a pig, but you would step on grass. You know, at least innately, plants aren't on the same level as animals.

It is  a personal choice which they are free to make, just as most meat eaters in western countries choose not to eat dog or cat meat.

It's called the "furry brown animal syndrome". Generally it's applied to ecology and species getting near extinction.  Folks will let wierd spiders disappear. Slugs, snails. plankton, they don't care.  Put a fuzzy puppy with big brown eyes on TV and they will storm the capitol with signs about saving the darling things.  This is a thing.
