This is totally not how stocks work, is it?
Last night Dow was about worthless, and today they're about 27,000 points up. Does that mean that, had I bought $1000 of stock last night, that it would be worth $27,000 today? How accessible are is stock investments?

You might want to do a lot more reading because you do not have the slightest clue right now. If the DOW was worthless last night, New York will be burning.

It was not about worthless last night and it is not about 27,000 point up. Last night it was at 27,691.49. The highest it got today was 27,770.86. It was up less than 10 points at its highest point of the day. And then it went back down to 27,691.49. If you bought $1000 of the stocks that make up the DOW last night, then it would be worth $1000 again tonight, because it ended the day in exactly the same place as yesterday.

Dow is an index of the top 30 industrial stocks - and it was not worthless 'last night'. Dow is not a stock.
With that view of what the stock market is, no explanation here will do it for you. Go to the library and check out some books on investing.

Does not mean that at all. The DOW is a composite index and does not reflect the value of one individual sock. Your imaginary stock could even have dropped significantly even if the overall index went up.

Where in the world were you looking that said it was about worthless? It closed yesterday at 27,691.50. And no, the gain or loss on any individual stock does NOT equal the amount of change in the DOW. The DOW can go up, your stock can go down, or vice versa.

You misread the information. Today the Dow 30 is at 27,710.01 +18.52 (+0.07%) at 12:25PM Eastern Time Nov 12, 2019, It was doing better today BEFORE the President said anything. Stocks do better when Trump says nothing.
Oct 31, 2019 27,046.23
Nov 01, 2019 27,347.36
Nov 04, 2019 27,462.11
----
Nov 11, 2019 27,691.49
And, these are indexes of many individual stocks.
If you bought $1000 of an ETF or Mutual fund that tracks the Dow 30 at the closing price, and did it without commission, the current selling price would be $1000.70
and may not stay ahead as the day continues. It is up 0.07 percent.
Fairly. But if you are a "novice", you might want to use an accountant or stockbroker.
