Could how friendly someone is be a big factor in whether or not someone gets a job? Or does that not usually matter much?

    It can matter some.

Most people are hired because of being liked.  That doesn't mean you have to be the most friendly applicant.  We are judged on so many levels that the best you can do is present yourself as the right person for the job.

Depends on what kind of job. It helps for a waitress to be friendly. For a dishwasher, not so much.

I was not overly friendly, I came to work, did my job and did it well and better than others and I got promoted several times and raises regularly.

Sure.   No one wants to work with an asshole regardless of how smart they are.
