a vent is a fracture in the ground, of some sort or other.  The magma flows to surface through that fracture.  It is a release system, a flow outlet, for the pressure of the underlying magma, which is why the term is vent.  All active volcanoes have vents, typically numerous ones, but sometimes very few.  Often, the same fracture system also acts to vent vapors (steam, CO2, H2S, or other gases).

Basically, any crack that allows a hot fluid (liquid or vapor) to flow out is a "vent" as a general term.
