If you look at divorce statistics, it seems to be becoming less and less important with each passing year. In this country anyway. ‘No fault’ divorce is very tempting for a lot of women, who seem to benefit from it the most. Children and fathers, not so much...

Because just being boyfriend and girlfriend doesn't exactly work out right when trying to raise children in a stable home. And because people mature and want more out of life than just being boyfriend and girlfriend.

Marriage provides a more stable background for raising children. Of course a marriage can be dissolved, but once a couple are married, it will take them longer to break up than if they had no legal or financial links.
And yes, I'm well aware that millions of children have been successfully and happily brought up by unmarried couples. But research keeps on, and on, showing that overall, the best basis for a good childhood is having a mother and father who love you.

It is a legal and economic recognition of two people living together for family/ love purposes. It also provides good reputation to the two people, rather than having them live together out of wedlock. Also provides better foundation for their children. I rather be married than be living with a partner out of wedlock.

Marriage is a tacit agreement to engage people to do the right thing. I think more to help keep children protected with a family. Sadly too many adults act immature and make life hard for kids. If you can't do that, don't have kids.
