Being strict for no other reason except being strict, isn't a good idea. It is good to instill good manners, respect for the law, good hygiene, and study habits. However, this must be balanced with providing a loving home, rewarding good behavior, having fun times, and providing greater freedom when the child shows he/she is trustworthy and responsible.

No there is not, because a strict parent looks like they are looking out for the well-being of their child or children

the word "Darn" got a classmate of mine to eat a bar of soap by his Christian Mother....   he almost floated away on an Irish Spring bubble....  and then we went to Church where I was strangled by a Communion Wafer …   not joking at all...  and Yahoo, you can delete this too since it will be in my Memoire...   F.O.

Yes, because eventually, it gets to a point where there is no room for a recognizable reward and punishment system.

it can be if discipline goes too far or parents don't allow children to practice their own thinking ability. sometimes being too strict can backfire.

Yes there sure is. Kids shouldn't have to be scared of their parents.

Absolutely. The authoritarian parenting style (aka "tiger mom," "Army dad," etc) can have all sorts of negative consequences, and aside from all-out neglect is the least effective parenting style. It's fine to have rules and expectations of kids, but emphasising obedience above all else doesn't really prepare kids to be able to function independently. Not to mention it can easily cross the line into emotional and psychological abuse, or even physical abuse among parents who believe in physical forms of punishment.

Yes - if parents control the child's life to the same extent at age 17 as they did at 17 months, for instance, that would leave the child unprepared to deal with life as an independent adult.

Certainly, just as there are parents with no clue.
