How did rappers afford to make music when they were poor?

    Recording music does not need to be expensive. You can do a reasonable job with free software - at least enough for a demo if nothing else.

    Rap is like punk -- it doesn't rely on having a song backed up by a 200-piece symphony orchestra or arranged by an expensive synthesizer wizard. Rap is mainly about the words, which are free.
