Chess tends to get the "high class" treatment because it's a very cerebral game & many prefer to honor said decorum while playing.  I'm not saying that you can't play casually (by having a conversation with your opponent in the process, assuming they're willing to talk), but there's a lot of tradition where people give the game (& players) some respect.

Chess is one of the few games that is perfectly balanced.  Players who know all the rules (including castling & the "en passant") can figure out the current state of the board at any given item since all information is in the public for all to see.  Each player starts out with the exact same pieces in the exact same starting position (unless a player elects to take a handicap) & therefore can plot out the most probable moves their opponent may take & react accordingly.  The only thing that gives one player a slight advantage in Chess is that White always moves first (so Black is generally reacting in response), but players will typically swap sides when playing multiple games a session with an opponent.  Therefore, it does require critical thinking & statistical analysis to consider what move to play.

The sportsmanlike conduct generally comes from the location where the game is typically played.  With a few exceptions, the venue most people play chess is usually in a fairly quiet location where outside noises & distractions are minimized.  The only reasonable exception is when playing a public park, utilizing the provided equipment (chairs & table.  Players will typically provide their own pieces & clock).  While the you can hear some distractions in the distance (traffic, children playing, ect.), the area near the chess tables are usually quieter to provide the welcoming environment to think things through.  The majority of others will quietly honor this unspoken rule so that everybody can enjoy the game.  Those who blatantly ignore such rules (by being loud & obnoxious) will likely get thrown out of the venue by others & will not be inviting to play with others until they respect the game & the players (nobody likes to play with a jerk or a bad sport).

It's such traditions that everybody who participates accepts (& ultimately appreciates) when playing & is generally reciprocated by the public in general.  While it may be just a board game, people like to uphold some traditions regarding it in spirit of good sportsmanship.

It includes strategy and brain power. You cannot be strategic if you are not smart. You do not have to be intelligent, but being smart goes a long way in chess.

chess is about tactics and strategy. it s not always a game of intellegence but also of knowledge because a better prepared player will win imediately just at the opening phase of the game. chess is also about mathematics as you have to solve problem along the way so you have to be exact in calculation...but sometimes intelligence and knowledge are irrelevant because you can make your chess move base on what feel or intuition..that s why tne beauty of chess is infinite... it is a very complex game ever invented by man!
