The diagonal distance is hypotenuse of a triangle with other sides made by East distance of 3 miles and Northe distance of 4 miles

This is a 3-4-5 triangle . so diagonal distance is 5 miles

If you want to find by calculation then

diagonal distance = √(3²+4²) = √(9+16) = √25 = 5 miles

Now original distance covered = 3miles + 4 miles = 7 miles

while diagonal distance = 5 miles

So the diagonal distance is 7 miles - 5 miles = 2 miles shorter
