Sweden has managed to increase GDP whilst having a massive carbon tax, so why do Conservatives lie & say it would hurt the economy?

Basically, because they are so in love with their rhetoric that they dismiss reality when it conflicts what the mythology that they've been indoctrinated into. Look at JimZ, he says "Any tax would hurt the economy. It is basic economics". Where in "basic economics" is that said, and what does it even mean? Hurt the economy how? He doesn't say what he means by that, he gives no source for that and he certainly doesn't give any evidence for it. The U.S. had higher GDP growth rates when the highest marginal tax rate was MUCH HIGHER than it is today, so how did that work if what he said was true?

There is no reason that economies can't grow while CO2 emissions are reduced. California has had very robust economic growth over the last 5 years, and at the same time more power is supplied by renewables. As I write this, more than 50% of California's electricity supply comes from sources that do not emit CO2, with over 40% classified as "renewables". Only about 0.1% is supplied by burning coal.

We need to deal with the problems of AGW in order to HELP economies, not hurt them.

They aren't lying- if you're as ignorant as a republican and think you show how much of a man you are by how big a truck you drive, it will hurt YOUR economy. For the rest of us with active brain cells, it will help us.

The OP is paid, alarmist troll Super Hans. He posts baloney like this all the time. It's a totally fake question. His employer is merely using Yahoo as a public relations medium. They questions are not genuine inquiry, but only to advertise.

Check Super Hans' level 1 profile. He has dozens--if not several hundred--of these accounts. He's collected them over the past decade. Unbelievably lying dirtbag.

Any tax would hurt the economy. It is basic economics. Conservatives favor a responsible government that is limited in power. Those of us that have a little bit of money are already taxed way too much. What kind of idiot has half their money taken from them and then supports those that were stealing the money in the first place. Sweden has lots of hydroelectric power so suggesting that carbon taxes didn't hurt Sweden too much and therefore we should harm our energy sources and make it harder and harder for the poor to pay for the electricity makes zero sense. The left pretends to care about the poor but their lies are exposed. They support the poor to the extent that they want to make everyone poor.

You get bozos like Bernie suggesting that socialism is good and they use Sweden as an example. The problem is that Sweden isn't a socialist country. They are a high tax country with many social benefits but they let businesses thrive. Still they have reversed many of their "socialist" tendencies of late.

I don't know any physicists like that, you liar. Multiplier effects exist in your subjective value, but they don't multiply. Neither in dollars or physical output.

How do you know that their GDP would not have risen more without the tax?

Perhaps it wouldn't have risen if they hadn't invested in new energy.

They're only interested in money going into their pockets. Good of the nation is their last concern.
