    Because most people are stupid.

Because life was always supposed to be miserable. The human race has fought from underneath, be it against disease, famine, predatory species... whatever. Working class life was still *incredibly* difficult until quite recently: walk around a cemetery and look at the ages on some of the 19th/early 20th century graves... shocking stuff.

People might no longer die at 30 (thanks to medical advances), and not need to fight giant animals and horde berries (thanks to supermarkets), but we still have primitive brain components from when we did. A big house, luxury sofa and back yard swimming pool wont save you.
