If you were to join the US Air Force right after college (say 22), by what age, on average, will you be able to make Captain?

It's a function of time-in-grade and time-in-service. Unless you do something to derail your career path, you make O-3 at four years of service. It's more or less automatic. Beyond O-3, though, you have additional professional military education requirements and selection boards.

Unless you are outstanding, it usually takes two years as a 2 LT and two years as a 1LT before you make captain. So figure 26.

From 2nd Lt to captain... for O3 you need at least 2 years beyond the 18 months required for O2.

if you aren't commissioning via ROTC or the USAFA, Captain is not likely at all since the AF has been severely limiting their officer accessions via OTS in recent years.

otherwise, Captain/O3 takes about 5 years-ish, depending on outside factors you cannot control.

If you mean technical/flight training, yes.  The clock starts when the person is commissioned.

If you want to get a commission, then you should either go to USAFA or do AFROTC in college.

If you try to get into OTS right after college, it could be years before you even get into an OTS class and get commissioned.

Every line officer makes captain at 4 years of commissioned service.  So, someone that is commissioned at 22 will make captain at 26.

The question was about the US Air Force.  Group Captain in the RAF is the equivalent of a Colonel in the USAF.

    I wouldn't be a Captain considering I am a kamikaze pilot.
