Why is an electrical outlet called an outlet when you plug things into it? Shouldn’t it be called an inlet?

Because electricity comes out of it.

You cut a tree down. Then you cut it up.

Does a building burn down or burn up?

Why is it when a door is open, it's ajar. But when a jar is open, it's not a door?

Don't fluck with the English language. Learn to accept it.   BTW...Health care is actually "sickness care" but no one ever says that.

Besides there is no electricity in any of your devices in the wire or the plug.   Fortunately for us, air is an insulator because electricity is coming OUT of the outlet...at all times.  When you plug something in you plug the holes and the power is now directed to go up in the wire to the device.  When you activate the device, that is when electricity is being used.

Electricity is coming OUT of the female electrical connector. It is a power SOURCE.

Many descriptive names can be interpreted more than one way, especially terminology from a century ago.

The female electrical connector on a wall is called a receptacle. Since the common wall receptacle actually has TWO female connectors, its proper name is a duplex receptacle.

why do you plug things in? Would you say electricity comes out? Thats been the thinking since day 1 when the first lady plugged the vacuum into the general power outlet in the lounge back when a lamp and radio were the only other things plugged in.

Because it is an outlet for electricity, which is the point of it.  The point of it is NOT to be an inlet for plugs that would otherwise have no purpose.
