Is there much point in continuing to fight when defeat is inevitable?

On the same day that Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, they launched a surprise attack against the British Empire in Hong Kong without even declaring war. They completely surrounded and isolated the island before launching a full scale invasion.

There were 1,895 British casualties with 6,000 wounded. The British fought on to the bitter end and ironically made their last stand in war cemeteries. Sai Wan Military Cemetery and the Stanley Military Cemetery were where the last soldiers perished.

Why bother though when you are obviously going to die? Would you go down fighting or just surrender?

I would always go down fighting. Thats not how life works to just surrender to death. Better to die on your feet then live on your knees.

Cause they don’t want to be POWs. And be a coward.

The English had watched very closely Japanese actions in China. They knew full well what the Japanese were about. If the choice is fight and die or surrender and die then lots of people will chose to fight.
