Can you help me with English please?

Scrawled beside the grade was the comment "Not badly written, but ill-conceived."

What does "scrawled" and "beside" mean in this case?

Thank you!

'Scrawl' means to write something quickly and clumsily, or handwriting that's hard to read (like my handwriting).

When a student hands in a paper to his teacher, the teacher reads it and writes a grade on the top.  Often there might be a brief comment written next to the grade (or 'beside' the grade), like 'Good!' or 'Keep up the good work!' or 'You could do better than this'.
