In the book ‘Salem’s Lot by Stephen King...?

Towards the climax, Ben Mears the main character tells a young boy, Mark, who he just met a couple of days ago that he loves him before they enter the vampire’s lair. Why do you think he said he loved him? He barely knew this kid. Was it because he was scared? Or was it because the kid reminded him of himself and he was all he had left? Or am I missing something?

    He saw him as the son he never had.

    He Identified with Mark.....Mark was the better part of Him
