A support system is one or more persons upon whom one can rely when they need someone to lean on (for support). Nothing more than being there may be required from those who constitute the support system, but they may also function as advisers, an audience, opinion providers, etc. Yes, it is like friends, but not casual friends. It is the kind of friendship that is close, meaningful, and mutual. It also means those who do not wait to be asked by someone in her/his time of need. They can always be counted on and don't need to be asked for the support they provide. They just do it.

Sure, friends are part of it. But a support system is more than just friends.
You need a knowledge base in your system. You need access to information. Like being on the Internet, like having access to a library, like having access to people with the pertinent information, and so on.
You also need access to available resources. Funds for a starter. But you might also need shelter, labor, and communication subsystems to support your system. They are all support systems or, more correctly, support sub-systems for your system whatever it might be.
So you need more than just friends. But friends are invaluable whenever you set out on a new adventure. There is a poem that goes, "No man is an island...." [See source.] We don't get things done without a support system.Source(s): This expression is a quotation from John Donne's Devotions (1624): “No man is an Island, entire of it self; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main.”
