    The "average" is massively skewed by the people that have millions. So "average" is pretty meaningless.

    Median is $172,000 at age 60, but that is probably below what they need.

    $172,000 by 60 years of age.  Don't know about 58 though.

    Average? It's not very much. Some people prepare, some don't. There are a number of articles in the internet that will tell you the exact answer. Those that save have prepared very well. Those that haven't..which is the majority, will be dependent upon Social Security.
