Depends on the visa, but as a general rule, you can't keep getting temporary visas so that in effect, you stay permanently. That particularly applies to Visitor visas and visas on the working holiday program, but even employer sponsored visas can only be 'extended' if the employer is willing to sponsor the worker for a new visa.

Generally not. IF it is an employment visa, renewals are solely at the discretion of the employer, NOT the employee, provided the occupation & the person's qualifications continue to be in short supply. The shortage list is updated regularly, and occupations are often eliminated entirely, or qualifications required are increased/upgraded. Also, the employer must continue to qualify to hire foreign workers.

Other types of visas have their limitations, restrictions as well. Always plan on temporary visas being TEMPORARY.
