The first year of a new decade ends in a 0

    0 to 9 is the decade .. like 20 to 29 are the 20's

I think people here are mixing up ''measuring time'' and ''what year it is''.

    For example ..

When you are born you are 0 (not 1) .. but 0 to 1 is year 1.

0 in the Julian Calendar and most other (about 100) calendar systems

But it can also be used in other ways that don't end in 0

    The current decade being (2010-2019),

    0 is the answer.

A decade is just a period of ten years. When it starts depends on how you are using the term.

For example, Halle Berry was born August 14, 1966. That started the first decade of her life. The second decade started August 14, 1976, then the third started August 14, 1986, etc. She's currently 53 but is in the *sixth* decade of her life.

Or we can talk about the Neil Armstrong landing on the moon in July 1969 as having occurred more than 5 decades ago.

Similarly, can talk about the decades in the Anno Domini year numbering system. The first decade would run from 1 A.D. to 10 A.D., then 11 A.D. to 20 A.D. We are currently in the 202nd decade A.D. which runs from 2011 A.D. to 2020 A.D. In counting decades this way, the decade starts on a year ending in 1 and ends on a multiple of ten times the decade number.

However, the most common, modern usage of the word decade would be a group years based on their shared tens digit, such as the 1960s referring to the period from 1960 to 1969. These decades are used to define fashion trends, music trends, social movements, etc. We are currently in the 2010s and next decade (the 2020s) will start in 2020, a year ending in 0.

there are two answers to this and any decade/century question.

    1. Historically, since there is no year 0, decades started at 1 and ended at 0, as did centuries. So 2010 decade runs from 2011 to 2020

    2. Common use, decades and centuries run from 0 thru 9. Except the very first of each. So 2010 decade runs from 2010 to 2019

you pick which you want to use.

disagree. The first year of a century is the year ending in 1, such as 2001, and last is 2100. Same with decades or millennia.

    The last digit is 1.

There was no year zero. So the first ten years were 1-10.  Ever since then, decades and centuries begin with 1 and end with 0.

The last digit of the first year of a new decade is 0. That is if you are considering a new decade to be from example 1980-1989. That would be 10 years. But if you are saying a decade from any given year then it would depend on what year you started on

One. Thus, the 1990s, for example, ran from 1 January 1991 to 31 December 2000.

How can the 1990's start from 1991 .. following your logic 30 is the last of the 20's and not the first of the 30's.
