In the state of Kansas, can an office take your expired temp tag?

Friend got pulled over for driving with an expired MO temp tag. The officer ended up taking it off the car and told her get your vehicle tagged in 2 weeks. She drives from Liberty MO to Lenexa KS for work everyday....is that legal???

Update:

In the state of Kansas, can an officer take your expired temp tag off your vehicle and then allow you to drive off with NO tag? Kind of thought it was illegal to not have up to date tags on your vehicle

Yes.  She was driving ILLEGALLY. the tag was no longer valid so not so she could continue to get away with driving without insurance(fooling the other officers to let her drive on thru with the bluffing.

    "SHE SHALL NOT PASS"

The tag is a Point A to Point B permit. One time. Straight as the crow flies. So, no shopping trips...or other errands.  For that you need insurance & Plates.  If you made the destination your home driveway or back lawn...(usually most do)- once home, then you got to grab the car paperwork and HOOF it or bus it to an Insurance agency and get insurance and plates which you carry back and affix to the car.  Now the car is insured and plated to be parked on the road or driven.

.  This is the way it has always been.

That is what "Temporary Permit" means.

.I have taken uninsured vehicles I have bought from peoples yards and got them to my shop.If I can't trailer them,I drive them.  I am insured in case of a crash from another car.

Him ripping off the tag meant he was patrolling the roads in that area so she was good till she got the car home.  Then "he knows & any other cop that does that beat" that she is not Legal until she does the nasty.

You don't mess with those guys. He went easy on you, because he could have had the car towed to impound lot and you would have to pay for the towing and the Impound lot fees & that is at least $100 (or you could be smart and use THAT $100 toward purchasing the car insurance for the car.  Unless you got money to BURN.?

    I don't.

Not just any office, no. Only a law enforcement official can do that. You know, kind of like they just did to your friend.

Yes, you're right, it is illegal to drive with no tags at all on a vehicle. It's also illegal to drive with expired temp tags on that same vehicle, so the cop decided on the lesser of two evils. He could have confiscated the illegal tags and had the vehicle towed to an impound lot, only to be released after proof of valid insurance and tags were provided.

But no, the cop didn't tell your friend to get the vehicle tagged within 2 weeks. He told her to get it tagged today, and maybe he would 'forget' to file the charges in the next 2 weeks.

    Sure he "can" do that.

    Sure it is legal

The plate was expired so it was useless and actually illegal to still be on the vehicle.

You say you thought it was illegal to drive without plates.....You are 100% correct. It is illegal.

You don't get it, do you? Since it is illegal to drive a car without being registered (Having license plates), the cop took the expired plate because he was telling her NOT TO DRIVE the car without plates.

She's lucky he didn't impound her car.

    Yep.

Driving ILLEGALLY, for ANY reason, is an offense. Period. She's damn lucky that the cop didn't impound her car, which he could have done, and which not only would have left her with no car now, but would have cost her in impound and storage fees. And, they would not have to release the car from impound until she brought her license and registration of the car up to date and showed proof of that to the impound yard staff.

There are NO excuses for driving ILLEGALLY, and driving a car with an EXPIRED tag IS illegal. Period.

No more illegal than driving on an expired temp tag.

Perfectly legal ....they confiscated an illegal temporary tag.

AND her being a single mother doesn't exempt her from the laws in your state.

It is legal. Since the tag is expired you cannot legally drive in on public roads. consider yourself lucky the vehicle did not get impounded.

It's NOT LEGAL to drive a vehicle with an expired registration. The Officer was being nice, giving her two weeks to get the car LEGALLY registered, as he COULD have impounded the vehicle right there.

Friend driving with a expired tag and ask if it is legal to remove it? HUH?

So now, if she continues to drive everyday for work, then with NO tag, odds are that another officer will give her another ticket, or could have the vehicle towed to a storage lot.

So friend needs to go to the DMV, get a permanent tag, (before) she drives anywhere else.

It's a hell of a lot more legal than driving with an expired tag for fooks sake.

Let's put this under "stupid question of the day".

It appears that both of YOU are stupid. The cop COULD have had her car towed. How much would that cost?
