Matchbox. Or, maybe a plastic one that you glue together.

    An older Civic would work.

None. No kid needs a car until in college.

Then, an old Malibu. Or Camry. Pay cash, do NOT give it to him. At 1% or what you are losing in savings.

FREE & running. Second choice is a VW slug bug that is running...that you buy completely for cash.(trouble is now they are collector cars so the $100 car now costs way more.) Buy something ugly that you can NOT HOP UP(which saves U a ton of dough) again for cash only. So you are probably looking at a station-wagon Volvo...which is neither the TERROR OF THE STREETS, nor likely to be stolen(even if the engine is left running). The old beaters are out there, mostly in peoples back yards(definitely not car lots...you avoid them like the plague as they add on $500+ for just having the car on their lot. They did not do a thing to it, and their guarantee goes as far as the car lot...(so no different than a private sale.). I have always have had success with private sales. Cheap cars have their problems.(because you can't afford to buy new, and you don't know how to treat the car right...as a first time driver will try to drag race or 4 wheel drive it or load it with 20 people to go to a party...that is in the middle of the bush or an orchard. Underage drinking happens so you do not want the party crashed by the cops which is why you are partying out in HELL'S HALF ACRE. Or maybe you can afford a massive car because they are generally gas HOGS...so they go cheaper. They will get stuck out in the orchard and the tow truck can't reach you so the car is left behind. Go buy a lighter car next time. Something 5 guys can push out or carry out of the bush. You spend enough money to keep it running. It is irrelevant that it looks like a rustbucket, or uglier than your sister or leaks some oil or burns some. It at least rolls and keeps you dry in the rain.

Get an older 4 door car. Old Honda's and Toyota's are pretty reliable. Never get a 2 door car because insurance will cost too much.

And, it's Hondas and Toyotas. Plural, not possessive or a contraction.

A Peugeot 107 or one of its sisters, Citroën C1 or Toyota Aygo. They have one litre engines and do 60mpg with a top speed of 98 mph.

More importantly, they are the cheapest car on the market to insure and here in Britain the road tax is £20 per year if registered before 2017.

My daughter has a C1 and I drove it home when she bought it. It's a fun little car with Japanese reliability.

What more can you ask for?

An older car that's not worth a lot, so the loss wont hurt so much when you crash it. And you most likely will crash it. The FIRST thing on every (male) kid's mind when they get into a car is "How fast will this thing go?"

It is best to get a cheap one because otherwise the insurance will be insane. Then you should get one with a low bonnet, a high bonnet SUV is twice as likely to kill a pedestrian when struck head on. And inexperienced young drivers do run over a lot of people especially when high or drunk. Get one with a reliable engine because most youngsters don't have much experience with roadside breakdowns and you don't want to be stranded in the middle of Nowheresville because of a minor engine fault.
