When you live at any apartment and pay rent, can you get the apartment to be under section 8 when you want to? ?

    No. Section 8 requires both acceptance by the landlord and requires the landlord's property to be approved by HUD. Many landlords don't want section 8 tenants because they like to be paid rent on time in full (Section 8 is notoriously slow) and they can't count on the tenants to properly care for the property (or have a means to pay for the repairs should they exceed the cost of the deposit). Thus of the few people who do gain section 8 vouchers (there is typically a long line to get one) they often then have difficulty finding landlords willing to accept them.

    No, most landlord do not want to accept section 8 because many of section 8 people tear up places because they are getting the place & hardly paying any money. You can't force landlords to take section 8.

    If Dustin as a username means you are a man then the likely hood of you even being put on the lists that are years long for the wait is  even highly unlikely.  If the category of the Apt were changed to Sec8 you would have to qualify for the apt and you would not go get a damn job or 2 or 3!

    No.

    It is not your choice if the landlord wants to accept Section 8 vouchers.That is up to the landlord.

    No. You cannot get any apartment you want to be under Section 8. Also, if an apartment is under Section 8, then a person not on Section 8 might not be able to live there. You definitely can't have it switch back and forth whenever you want.

      people paying all the rent on their own can live in private section 8 apartments

    No. The owner has to apply and be approved by HUD beforehand.

    No.

    You do not decide whether or not the apartment is, or can be, Section 8.

    The apartment owner or landlord is the one who decides that they will accept Section 8 vouchers. Then they need to be accepted and approved by the program.
