When is a good time to replace my MacBook?

I've had a hand me down MacBook Air from my dad for about 5 years, and he had it for two years prior. It's only got four gigabytes of storage and the battery life and charging cord are on their last limbs. Should I get an upgrade or can I exchange a 7 year old model for a newer one?

You can't "exchange" it for a newer one. You could try to sell it on Craig's List or better take it to a computer/electronics recycling place. If it's still working, buy a new one (or a used/refurbished one that's a year or two old), transfer everything you need. Then delete from the old one anything you don't want anyone else to have, and DONATE it (check your local area for computer donation programs).
